If your household is starting to be overwhelmed by the number of remotes you have, then it may be time to invest in a universal remote. Nowadays, there are remotes for everything; the TV, the cable box, DVR, DVD player, music players and more. Each of these devices usually comes with its own remote. So it’s pretty easy to get confused about which remote controls what.
That’s why a universal remote can be so handy. A universal remote is, according to PCMag, “[a] handheld remote control that can turn on and operate any unit of equipment in a home theater system.”

Here’s how to program universal remotes from RCA and GE:
RCA Universal Remote
Read the following steps to find out how to program universal remotes from RCA to act as the universal remote for your home entertainment system:
- Turn on whatever device you want to program.
- Press and release the button on the remote that corresponds with whatever device you’re currently attempting to program (i.e. the TV, the DVD player, etc.). You’ll notice that the ON-OFF button will turn on and stay on as you complete this step.
- Press the device button again, this time simultaneously with the ON-OFF button. The ON-OFF button will turn off and then come back on immediately. Release both buttons once the ON-OFF button comes back on. It should stay on once you release the buttons.
- Press the PLAY button on the remote. The device you’re programming should respond within five seconds. If it doesn’t respond after five seconds, press the PLAY button every five seconds until the device turns off.
- Press and release the REVERSE button once the device turns off to see if it will turn on again.
- Press and release STOP to save the new code.
How to program a remote from GE
A GE universal remote works largely the same as an RCA universal remote. To program universal remotes from GE, you can either manually enter the codes or use the code search feature. Here’s how:
How to program a remote by manually enter codes
- Remove the battery cover and batteries from the GE universal remote. You’ll find a stick with the model number; note whether it’s version 1 (V1), V2, V3 or V4.
- Download the list of codes for your model from the Jasco website. Use the code for the device you’re using.
- Turn on the device you’re programming (TV, DVD player, DVR, etc.).
- Hold the SETUP button for four seconds until the indicator light illuminates red.
- Press the corresponding device button, depending on which device you’re programming currently.
- Enter the code. It can be either 3-digits or 4-digits. If you’ve entered the correct code, the indicator light should turn off.
- Press the POWER button. If the device turns off, you’ve successfully programmed that device into the remote control.
How to program a remote using the code search feature
- Find the version number of your GE universal remote (same instructions as step 1 above).
- Turn on the device you want to program into the remote first.
- Hold down the SETUP button for four seconds and then press the corresponding device button.
- Press the POWER button and wait for the device to turn off. If you have a V2, V3 or V4 remote and are programming a DVD player, press PLAY and wait for device to begin playing.
- After two seconds, press the POWER/PLAY button again. The device should turn off. If it doesn’t, repeat until the device turns off. V2, V3 and V4 remotes don’t need for you to continue pressing the button; the remote will automatically send the command every two seconds.
- Press the ENTER or OK button on a V1 remote to lock in the code. Press the numeral “1” button within two seconds to lock in a code for a V2, V3 or V4 remote. The indicator light should turn off if you’ve successfully entered the code.
GE apparently thinks it’s a good idea to sell at least five different universal remote controls with the same model number.
Ge Universal Remote Manual 24116
Not only that, but the instructions for programming the different remotes are different, and the instructions for one won’t work for the others.

As a result, when you try to search online for the manual for your remote because you need to reprogram it and you’ve lost the manual, it’s a huge pain to find the right manual with instructions that work.
I had that experience this morning. My remote has a sticker inside it that says “RC24914-E” on the first line and “2917” on the second line.

If your sticker also ends in “-E”, then this is the manual you need to use for it: https://vdocuments.mx/download/24914-manual-eng-spa. I also downloaded it here in case that link disappears.
But I’ll save you some trouble and tell you the most important things to know:
Ge Universal Remote Manual Codes
- When changing the batteries, your codes will be preserved as long as you do the swap within ten minutes, but they won’t be preserved if the batteries drain all the way or if you push any buttons while the old batteries are out before the new ones are in.
- To enter a known code:
- press and hold the SETUP button until the lights stays on;
- press the desired device button; and
- enter the four digit code.
- To search for a code:
- press and hold the SETUP button until the light stays on;
- press the desired device button;
- pointing the remote at the device whose code you’re trying to find, press the ON/OFF or channel up button repeatedly (you may have to do it up to 300 times) until the button works (i.e., until the device turns on or off or the channel changes); and
- press the ENTER button to install the code.
- Note that by default the code search will only try out codes for the type of device whose button you pressed at the start (i.e., TV, DVD, etc.). If you want to assign a device to a different kind of button, you can do that by first assigning any code of the appropriate type to the button you want to assign, then using the instructions above to do a code search.
- Code search starts from where you last left off, so if you install a code from code search and then discover after trying it out that it’s not working quite right, you can start another code search and it’ll pick up where you left off.
- To find out what code is assigned to a button:
- press and hold the SETUP button until the light stays on;
- press the desired button;
- press the SETUP button again;
- press the numbers 0-9 one by one until the red light blinks; the number which causes the blink is the first digit of the four-digit code; and
- repeat the previous step for the next three digits; note that the light will go out rather than blinking after the last digit.
P.S. Just on the off chance that this will help someone:
- my Sylvania LCD Cover TV Model LC370SS9 has the code 1172; and
- my Daewoo VCR model DV-T5DN uses the code 0279.
